Today is the day of Frigga’s Blot –  much more than just the wife of the All-Father Odin, she is the goddess of prophecy & silence, wifehood & motherhood. She is a sky goddess, responsible for spinning and weaving the fates.

 To celebrate Frigga this Friday, a domestic setting is appropriate, as she is closely connected with hearth and home.  An ideal situation would be a girls night in, not so much a hen night as a goose night – the goose is Frigga’s sacred bird. Legend connects her with the original Mother Goose.

 She was credited with first using rune stones as a form of divination, so tonight is an auspicious night for fortunetelling. I am creating my own edible version of rune stones using flower flavours (as we are still in a time influenced by flower goddess Flora) and Frigga’s colours of white and blue.

 

We will stick with the white and blue theme for the drinks – that classic cocktail of antiquity (OK, the 1980’s) – the Blue Lagoon – is the perfect drink to raise as a toast to Frigga, as it is associated primarily with female drinkers and mirrors the blue sky where she makes her home, spinning goose feathers into clouds and snow.

Burn white votive candles for the goddess.

Surround yourself with a gaggle of wonderful women, make a few rounds of Blue Lagoons, and do some scrying with cookies. I like to save flower petals from bouquets – so handy for strewing around the place on nights like these. Also very useful for weddings, as many places don’t like you to use non-biodegradable confetti these days. Just keep a drying tray on top of the fridge and add flower petals as they arrive. You never know when they will come in handy.

Frigga’s Lavender & Rose Rune Cookies

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon lavender, crushed, & 3 drops lavender essence
1 & 1/2 cups of plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
blue food colour

Icing
2 cups powdered (icing) sugar
water
rosewater
Blue squeezy icing for writing

Preheat oven to 375 degrees, cream together butter & sugar. Add eggs, lavender, lavender essence, flour, baking powder, food colour and salt.

You want a firm dough, so add more flour if it seems too sticky.

Make small balls of the dough and space out on a foiled baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes.

Mix the sugar with just enough water/rosewater to make a smooth paste- drip it in until you have enough, mixing briskly all the while.
Dip each cookie in the icing after they have cooled, and spread it around the edges gently with a butter knife. Allow the white icing to completely harden before adding the blue runes with squeezy icing.

 

Now that you have a full set of rune cookies with hopefully some extras to add as you go along, you are ready to roll. Place them all on a large plate and put them before the One Who Seeks To See That Which Will Come.

 While their eyes are closed, turn the plate 3 times, then allow them to take 3 cookies at random from the plate. Examine them.

I have included here a basic guide to the reading of the runes – it is up to the participants to garner their significance for each individual. If you have somebody there who has studied the runes, excellent. If not, discussion should be open to all as you consider the possible interpretations.

If a rune is upside down, the meaning is reversed.

 

If you do not find the answers you seek, munch down the troublesome portents, and try again. Sometimes the runes are cloudy and hard to interpret. Add in the extra cookies as you go, just like topping up your letters in a game of Scrabble.

For myself, I have Laguz reversed, which stands for water and birth. Because it is reversed, this suggests the end of a venture. Gebo is the rune of gifts, and Jera is the rune of completion. This suggests to me the positive end of a creative venture, which makes perfect sense as I have just completed this blog post  🙂

 Blue Lagoon

 1 shot vodka

1 shot blue curacao (This is basically a bitter orange liqueur, with a shot of intense blue)

1 shot lemon juice

Fizzy lemonade (Cloudy or clear, your choice)

 

Simply combine the vodka and curacao with the lemon juice in a shaker with ice, agitate and pour over fresh ice, then top up with lemonade. You may wish to reduce the amount of lemon juice, if this is too tart for you. Perhaps drink this with a straw to avoid blue lip syndrome.

All hail to Frigga! If you have an Odin in your life, save them a cookie and a cocktail in keeping with this celebration of home, hearth and husband, whatever form they may take in this crazy modern world we live in.
